Email, Directory Services & Virtual Private Network Access (installed 1/27/04)
Establish an in-house email, file-sharing and Directory Services server, plus Remote network access for telecommuting and traveling staff.
Telemedicine and Distance Learning (in service 8/25/03; travel unit in service 5/7/04)
Using the best in videoconferencing equipment and methods, WCV is incorporating telemedicine into it's Wildlife Residency Program, wildlife and conservation distance learning, and veterinary medicine instruction. WCV has installed a Tandberg 880 unit and we're rolling! Weekly Shenandoah Valley Governor's School, and Shenandoah Public Education Network consortium (SPEN). After May 7 2004 a travel unit will be in service for US and international remote collaboration.
In July 2002, The Wildlife Center completed a $175k series of broadband network infratructure projects, including donations from Cisco Systems, Ntelos, Shields Communications and grep Innovation LLC and many private volunteers. WCV now operates a complete redundant-switched Gig-E backbone Ethernet network utilizing 600 feet of fiber, 100 Cat5e drops, and a campus-wide 802.11b wireless LAN (Wi-Fi), fed via T-1 from Ntelos.
